Poster: WWBD Welcome to the Citizens For Batman Forums! This is the place for discussing all things related to The Batman. This is a place for CFB vetted members only. Please don't direct just anybody to look at this site. Everyone on this site has attended at least a couple of meetings and has been approved personally by one of the committee guys after a face to face conversation. Some rules: Don't spam. No trolls. No excessive language. Bad behavior may get you banned. |
Poster: WWBD Welcome to all the new people who asked to be admitted to the forum at the last meeting. Glad to have you here. |
Poster: WWBD We've had some new people join. I'm really glad to see these forums growing. Two things DO NOT DISCUSS SENSITIVE MATTERS ON THE FORUM. While only people who have been vetted can post, this is the internet, people. Some people in government are not so supportive of what we are doing. And PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL OF EACH OTHER. |
THE BAT CLUBHOUSE
Poster: SewerMutant Post about Batman sightings in the press, like The Gotham Times had that great photo of Batman a few weeks ago where he was at that festival with the crazy weird name and he's by the telephone pole. It's righteous. |
Poster: Tadarida Can we post video? |
Poster: Sidekick You've got VIDEO? POST IT! |
Poster: Tadarida I don't have vidoe, I just want to know if people can post it to the forum. |
Poster: Sidekick You r lame. |
Poster: dark-witness it's a fair question someone will get it eventually |
Poster: Ns 18 Probably not. |
Poster: dark-witness someone will have a cell phone and get video |
Poster: Ns 18 Batman works at night. He specializes in the element of surprise he shows up when a crime is going on when people are engaged in violence. |
Poster: Amanita Ns18 people have gotten pictures of him and people got video of that guy that was beat up by the cops at night. |
Poster: Ns 18 Batman doesn't want anyone to see him. Just catch glimpses. |
Poster: Scramble Amanita is right. It might take awhile, but the Times has gotten photos of Batman. |
Poster: Amanita Tx Scramble. |
Poster: SmokinJoe It was great to meet so many of you guys at the meeting. I finally figured out how to get on this messenger board. I want to talk about Batman's tactics. It seems to me that he has basically two approaches to a crime scene. His favorite is from above, like the way he swung down to help that homeless guy who was being hassled. The other one involves his car, but he doesn't use that much because it basically eliminates the element of surprise. |
Poster: dark-witness he does like to come in from above have you noticed that sometimes he *drops in* and sometimes he uses a kind of lasso to immobilize someone from above and then *hoist* them. he either leaves them helpless and dangling or tied to something for the cops |
Poster: Amanita Something I don't understand and I was hoping someone here was a lawyer or something and could tell me. When the police get there, what do they arrest the bad guys for? |
Poster: Ns18 Whatever they did wrong. |
Poster: Batfan73 LOL! |
Poster: Amanita Say someone is trying to braek into a car, and Batman stops them. When the cops get there the guy is tied to a light pole or something. They don't know what he did. He's not going to say I'm trying to steal a car and Batman stopped me. He's just some guy tied to a light post. |
Poster: Ns18 There would be implicating evidence. Marks on the car where the guy tried to break in. |
Poster: Amanita And the guy says it wasn't him. I mean, batman isn't a cop, so what does it mean when he catches someone? |
Poster: Ns18 Why are you being such an idiot? |
Poster: Scramble She's not being an idiot, and you're being a jerk. |
Poster: Ns18 It's a citizen's arrest. |
Poster: Scramble There's not really such thing as a citizen's arrest. |
Poster: Ns18 from wikipedia: Each state permits citizen arrests if the commission of felony is witnessed by the arresting citizen, or when a citizen is asked to assist in the apprehension of a suspect by police. |
Poster: Scramble There's also a law on the books that a husband can't beat his wife with a stick thicker than his thumb, but that doesn't mean you should try using a thinner one because that's okay. |
Poster: Ns18 Are you saying Batman doesn't get results? |
Poster: Scramble I'm just saying that it isn't a stupid question that Amanita asked, and your response was out of line. |
Poster: Ns18 whatever |
Poster: SewerMutant Saw on the news last night that Batman stopped a crime just by showing up. Guys doing it saw him and just ran. That means that his appearance is enough to stop criminals. Cool!!!! |
Poster: BigEd Good to see you at the meeting. You said some good stuff. You should post more. A couple of us are going to get together at Sorrily's on Cook Avenue on Wednesday. |
Poster: OscarD Is that an open invitation BigEd? |
Poster: BigEd Open to like-minded people OscarD and you certainly qualify. |
Poster: Amanita Scramble, PM me when you get on. It's important. |
Poster: OscarD Amanita this isn't a personals site. |
Poster: Amanita Sorry but you guys were talking about meeting each other and I needed to talk to Scramble. |
Poster: BigEd Our meeting is business A. |
Poster: LibertyLiz Playing army is business Ed? |
Poster: OscarD Liz perhaps you failed to notice what the last meeting was about, since you spent most of it talking instead of paying attention. |
Poster: LibertyLiz If you guys had anything real to say, I would. But since you're a bunch of middle-aged guys who think you're going to go out and be Batman, all I see is male posturing. |
Poster: OscarD And all I see from you is critizing. Go head the t-shirt committee or something. |
Poster: Scramble Leave the women alone, Oscar. |
Poster: Clem Hey Scramble, maybe you should stay away from my wife. |
Poster: schlockmeister Whoa. Isn't Scramble the dude with the shaved head? Whose Amanita? She isn't that mousy little thing that hands out copies of the previous meeting's minutes, is she? I can't wait for the next meeting. |
Poster: Batfan73 LOL! |
Poster: BigEd Did you see that they're blaming Dent for that business |
Poster: stavros Garcetti's a snake. |
Poster: Sid_Bat It's Dent's fault. |
Poster: BigEd Are you kidding? First they squeeze that cop so he has to lie, then they blame Dent! |
Poster: ZincBadger It's all corrupt. Dent is the second best thing that's happened to this city. ;) |
Poster: WWBD This belongs in a different thread. |
Poster: schlockmeister Hey, I didn't see Scramble or Amanita at the last meeting. |
Poster: OscarD I wasn't at the last meeting. Anything good happen? |
Poster: LibertyLiz It was civilized. |
Poster: OscarD Well thank you for your opinion, Liz. Why don't you go bake a cake to support the cause? |
Poster: LibertyLiz When Gotham needs cakes, you can be sure I'll bake them, Oscar. |
Poster: Batfan73 LOL! |
Poster: OscarD Why do you think that's funny? |
Poster: Batfan73 LOL! |
Poster: ZincBadger Friday, April 18th, 2008 at 19:37 BigEd, the meeting was great. Meet up with you tomorrow and then we'll take matters into our own hands. |
Poster: OscarD Saturday, April 19th, 2008 at 21:16 Anybody notice the guy in the red polo shirt at the last meeting? Sitting in the back with his arms crossed? Turns out he's Gotham PD. |
Poster: SewerMutant Saturday, April 19th, 2008 at 21:28 The cops are on our side! |
Poster: OscarD Saturday, April 19th, 2008 at 21:45 Nah. Just keeping an eye on us. |
Poster: BigEd Saturday, April 19th, 2008 at 22:19 Let's all take this discussion to email. |
Poster: OscarD Sunday, April 20th, 2008 at 12:52 I don't know how many of you heard that BigEd had to go to the ER last night. He's okay and he's back home. Email me if you want to know details. |
Poster: Captain Satellite Sunday, April 20th, 2008 at 16:48 Did they have to put a pin in his arm? |
Poster: OscarD Sunday, April 20th, 2008 at 17:05 Yeah. But they say he'll have full use again. |
Poster: Batfan73 Sunday, April 20th, 2008 at 23:58 Tell BigEd we're all thinking of him. I've been thinking about how crazy this is to go out at night, walking through my neighborhood, 'protecting' people. I'm just an ordinary guy, you know? Got two kids. Boys, 6 and 8. Could really use my sleep. My wife thinks I'm selfish, putting myself at risk 'playing Batman.' My kids play 'Fear Toxin' in the backyard. They run around spraying each other and screaming with fear. It probably doesn't mean any more than when we were kids and we used to play war. There was a hill in my parents back yard and me and the other kids in the neighborhood used spend hours screaming 'grenade!' and throwing ourselves down that hill. But it feels different to me, maybe because their uncle, my brother-in-law, got a dose of fear toxin. He's been in and out of the hospital. When I got home from work yesterday, I parked my truck (I'm an electrician) and I heard the kids playing in the back. I looked over the fence to see what they were doing. My oldest boy had a towel tied around his neck. He was Batman, and he was saving the younger from 'bad guys.' It made me feel good. It felt like hope. |
GARCETTI IS WRONG
Poster: Czar Lee Roger Garcetti sez that he thinks Batman is a vigilante. He says that Batman should be arrested. This makes me so mad. Batman is the best thing that has happened to this city. |
Poster: Sidekick This city is ****messed up***** Anything good that happens gets *****messed up***** Politicians in this city are the worst. They're all crooked. |
Poster: Tadarida I support Batman but Garcetti, as a representative of the established civil authority really has to take that position. Batman exists outside the established authority and is therefore a threat to it. Think about it, there are over four hundred citizens for every cop, so the system works only if 1. the police are the only ones to enforce order and 2. most of us follow the rules and the police only have to deal with a few people who deviate. The alternative is a world where anyone who has a grudge takes care of it themselves. That means that a person who feels wronged deals directly with his neighbor, shoots them if they feel its necessary. You get feuds and lawlessness and a survival of the fittest. The strong dominate the weak. By taking the law into his own hands, Batman threatens the police monopoly on maintaining order and could be seen as taking the first step towards that kind of lawlessness. The problem is that the police are not keeping their end of the civil contract. We give them power with the understanding that they will maintain order. But anyone who lives in Gotham can see that order and safety are breaking down. We are already in a state of lawlessness. Batman is responding to the increasing disorder. And so are we by joining Citizens For Batman. |
Poster: OscarD So you are saying that Batman should be arrested? Why the hell did you join this group then? You should leave. You're not welcome here. |
Poster: Tadarida If you read my post, you'll see that I say Garcetti has to call for Batman's arrest because he represents the civil organization. But the civil organization (that is, the city of Gotham) is failing in its contract with the citizens of the city. |
Poster: OscarD I'm not a lawyer OR a politician and I don't have a PHD in gobblygook. Plain English. |
Poster: dark-witness i think what tarida is saying is that garcetti has to want to arrest batman but we don't he doesn't want to arrest the b-dude |
Poster: OscarD Then why doesn't he say that? |
Poster: buttercookies people like Tarida use long words to compensate for there stupidity |
Poster: WWBD buttercookies, no insults. This is your first warning. |
Poster: buttercookies Joke, WWBD. |
Poster: BigEd Who do you plan to vote for? I'm for Dent. |
Poster: ZincBadger Dent. |
Poster: schlockmeister Dent. |
Poster: SmokinJoe Harvey Dent. |
Poster: dark-witness Garcetti makes my skin crawl. |
Poster: LibertyLiz Dana Worthington. But Dent is going to win. |
Poster: OscarD Is that some sort of Feminist solidarity, Liz? |
Poster: LibertyLiz Just democracy in action, Oscar. |

BATMAN OR THE BATMAN
Poster: Thunder880 Some people call him 'Batman' and some people call him 'The Batman.' Which is it? |
Poster: Batfan73 LOL! |
Poster: IndigoGrrrl It's just Batman. |
Poster: Thunder880 How do you know? :) |
Poster: IndigoGrrrl Because I wouldn't call you 'The Thunder880.' If you refer to him as 'The Batman' it's like the way you talk about a kind of thing, like you say, 'I gave it to the dog.' It's not like there are a whole bunch of Batmans. If we keep saying 'The Batman,' what would we call him if we met him face to face? |
Poster: schlockmeister Sir |
WHO IS BATMAN?
Poster: ZincBadger Who is Batman? Is he an athlete? He can do incredible stuff. |
Poster: Batmand00d I don't think we should be asking who Batman is. |
Poster: ZincBadger It's a fair question. |
Poster: OdeToJoy Batmand00d is right, I think. Batman is better mysterious. |
Poster: buttercookies I want to know what gym he goes to |
Poster: Tadarida Batman is a symbol. If we don't know who he is, then his power is greater. We live in a world where what we buy and what we see shapes who we are. Research shows that in cultures where there are large social divisions-divisions in wealth and divisions in culture like different religions and languages-have much larger problems with crime than more homogeneous societies. Batman exists in that chasm. He is no society and no culture. His choice of a costume makes him 'not us' since no culture or religion has ever dressed like him. His decision to take on animal aspects makes him even more mysterious and taps into very profound and mostly unconscious reactions from us, the same reactions that were evoked by the Shaman of Trois Freres, whose very human eyes look out at us from the mask of a stag. We are programmed to respond to Batman's us/not us status in powerful ways-with fear. If you expose the man behind the mask, the power of the marginal status disappears and the man becomes just a guy in a weird suit. |
Poster: batmand00d Yeah what he said |
NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
Poster: SmokinJoe In the meeting, there was a lot of talk about forming neighborhood watch committees. I'm assuming everybody here is pretty clear on what this means. Let's talk about taking back our neighborhoods. We know the police are no help, let's talk about TAKING MATTERS INTO OUR OWN HANDS |
Poster: ZincBadger About time. Count me in. |
Poster: BigEd There was some talk about a buddy system, but I think we should take our cue from Batman. He works alone. |
Poster: OscarD I'm patrolling my neighborhood tonight. |
Poster: LostnFound I think Larry's thing on the front page sums it up. The cops are corrupt, the judges don't care. I'm going on patrol tonight to. |
Poster: WWBD No real names on the site LostnFound. |
Poster: Sid_Bat I think we should talk about buddy-ing up. I really respect Batman, but we aren't him. I don't know about your neighborhood but since I don't think I can jump off a roof top and clobber guys, I'd like someone out there who has my back. |
Poster: BigEd I'm not saying you can't have a buddy. But I'm just saying it makes it harder. You gotta find someone, someone you can trust. Me, I'd rather go it alone. |
Poster: Sid_Bat It's pretty much the same as scuba diving. You need someone if you get in trouble. |
Poster: BigEd Fine, you want a buddy, you should get a buddy. |
Poster: Captain Satellite We should leave the acrobatics to Batman. I've got two kids. I want things to get better in my neighborhood and I'm willing to do a real neighborhood watch, you know, with neighborhood guys on patrol and all that, but much as I admire Batman, I think the guy has a bit of a death wish, you know? And I don't. |
Poster: ZincBadger That sounds good, but the problem is, you're out there, patrolling your neighborhood, and you see something, if you call the cops they might come in a couple of hours. They might not come at all. The criminals know that. You've got to scare them yourself. |
Poster: Tadarida As I have pointed out before, there is a social contract between the city and its citizens. The police force is supposed to provide protection. But the police won't or can't keep their end of the bargain. The only recourse is for us to protect ourselves. |
Poster: Sid_Bat Batman has given us hope. Somebody had a big post about him as a symbol (I'm not going to go through threads to find it.) But I looked around the last meeting and saw a bunch of guys (and a couple of girls) who were just ordinary people. Batman has some sort of fancy stealth vehicle. I drive a ten year old Volvo that my wife's parents handed down to us. It's got a kid's car seat in the back. Taking matters into our own hands is going to be dangerous. I'm not sure I want to do that. |
Poster: OscarD Maybe you don't belong here.. |
Poster: Sid_Bat If you're not even willing to talk about it, maybe I don't belong here. |
Poster: OscarD You said it, not me. |
Poster: WWBD This thread is closed. See Admin thread. |
I GOT A PICTURE!
Poster: Reddy-Steddy I was at 5th street when this went past! |
Poster: ZincBadger That is so cool. |
Poster: dark-witness Sa-weeeeet! |
Poster: Ns 18 It's fake. |
Poster: Sid_Bat What makes you say that? |
Poster: Ns 18 It could be anything. It looks like a garbage truck. |
Poster: Sioux-man You can tell it's not fake. Look at the front! |
Poster: Batmand00d Looks real to me. |
Poster: buttercookies He's in the city! |
THANK YOU
Poster: AddolorarsiPapa I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who made me feel so welcome at the last few meetings. The way things have been going on, I wasn't sure if there was anything good about this city. Now I know there's something good. |
Poster: LibertyLiz Hey AddolorarsiPapa, I've got some people who are interested in contributing to that scholarship for a deserving girl. Like I told you at the meeting, we want to do it in your family's name. Will you be at the next meeting? |
Poster: AddolorarsiPapa I will, LibertyLiz. Thank you. |
BATMAN'S STUFF
Poster: Ns 18 It's pretty obvious that Batman is ex-military. Maybe Navy Seal. He's getting gear from somewhere, probably contacts in the defense industry. I'm pretty sure his suit has got some kind of Kevlar. That's just standard. Then there's the vehicle. It's some kind of military thing. I wonder if there is more than one of the guy. I'm thinking a few ex-special forces guys. I'm looking at sources for bulletproof vests and stuff but it's all pretty expensive. It makes me wonder if Batman isn't funded by the government? Maybe he's part of some elite secret thing they're trying out here in Gotham? |
Poster: Hamachi I think he's from the future. |
Poster: Sid_Bat You're joking, right? |
Poster: Batfan73 LOL! |
Poster: Hamachi No. |
Poster: OscarD I think you're onto something Ns. Some kind of Psych-Ops crime fighting. |
Poster: ZincBadger My wife's brother was something in supplies in the army. I'll see if he knows anything. |
